Newspapers and Their Decline

All of us depend on the presss to provide us with information on what is happening in our town, country and world at large. The press indeed plays a very important part. The newspapers are sometimes are only means of staying in touch with the world at large. With our busy schedules nowadays we have not time for television or anything else. It is reading the newspaper during our early morning cup of coffee that often allows us to reconnect with our world.

The UK has many newspapers and a very rich press, thanks to its small geographical area and its amazing transportation infrastructure. Unlike most countries, the UK has many national newspapers. The newspapers are grouped into three distinctive groups, mass market tabloids, middle market tabloids and quality broadsheets. However the UK does not have any all sport newspapers.

The most popular newspapers in the UK are “The Sun” and “The Daily Mirror”. As you can guess, the two are bitter rivals. Both the papers subscribe to very different political views. “The Daily Mirror” always supported the left wing- Labour and it appears that “The Sun” too has shifted its support to the left wing.

The mass market tabloids have used sex to sell. Most of the newspapers will have adverts related to sex or services. Many of their articles are closely linked to pornography industry. Most of their stories are fanciful sex related stories and almost every page displays some naked women.

In the last couple of years there has been the delivery of the free newspaper in the UK. These newspapers are given out in the busy cities and at public transport stations. Their editorial is every bit as informative as the paid for papers and is thus becoming a threat to the other established paid for newspapers. The papers are in big demand and usually at the tube stations, they are all sold out before 7.50am.
